City of Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach borders with North Miami Beach (South) , Miramar (West), Hollywood (North),and the Atlantic Ocean (East). With a total area of around four and a half square miles, and a population of about 35,000, Hallandale demographics are rapidly changing due to increasing proportion of the younger at the expense of the oldest   (65 +) segments.

Once one of Broward's graying cities, Hallandale Beach is in a demographic shift, with younger professionals from other counties, states and countries moving into new high-rise condos.

According to the 2000 Census, Hallandale  's median age has dropped from 63 to 52 and is expected to fall to 50 in 2010. Ninety percent of the buyers at The Duo, twin condominium towers behind the Diplomat Center, are younger than 55. And most of the buyers at the new Hallandale development  The Beach Club are in their 30s and 40s.

The old Hallandale Diplomat Mall, now reborn as RK Diplomat Center has become a great outdoor mall with the Piola pizzeria, a sushi restaurant, two Italian eateries, a yogurt shop and a Cold Stone Creamery, as well as a Quizno's and a Starbucks, mixing up with Ross, Burlington's clothing, Office Max, and many more stores.

All this change has created in Hallandale Beach an interesting dynamic with the snowbirds, the retirees, and the younger professionals now moving into these older condominiums. The younger people want better gym facilities, basketball courts and  yes, less shuffleboard. According to the 2000 Census, Hallandale foreign-born population rose to 36.1 percent, up from 25 percent in 1990. Of the new figure, 36 percent were from Europe and 44.4 percent were from Latin America (quoted from the Miami Herald).

History of Hallandale Beach:
"Settled in the late 1800's, when Henry Morrison Flagler expanded the Florida East Coast Railway to Palm Beach in 1895, there wasn't much to Hallandale Beach except swamp and a gray, sandy soil called marl. Flagler recruited Luther Halland, son of a Swedish minister and brother-in-law to one of his agents, to start a Swedish settlement south of the Danish settlement of Dania. Halland began promoting the frost-free subtropical climate and cheap land of Halland (later to be named Hallandale). He set up a small trading post in the new community and became its first postmaster. Settlement was slow, with only a dozen families in town by 1900.

The first  Hallandale school was built in 1904, the first church, Bethlehem Lutheran, in 1906. Originally, Hallandale was a farming community and officially became a town in 1927. In 1947, Hallandale was reincorporated as a city, and was allowed to annex land to the east. In August of 1999, the city officially changed its name to Hallandale Beach (quoted from the City of Hallandale' s website).

Hallandale Elementary School's enrollment is at an all-time, high with 1,290 students on a year-round schedule. They will move to a new, bigger school this fall. The old Hallandale  elementary school will be turned into a middle school. Currently, Hallandale students go to McNicol Middle School in Hollywood.
