Surfside population was 4,909 as of 2000: The total town area is about 1 square mile, between land and water. The racial makeup of the town is about 93.50% White, 1.28% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.51% from other races, and 2.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race total 43.53% of the population.

2,248 households of which 20.5% had children under the age of 18, 46.6% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% were non-families.

Population was composted of 16.3% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 25.9%  65 years of age or older. Median age:45 years. 86.9 males for every 100 females.

Household Median income: $50,927.  Family median income: $56,327.
